Rise Shows Money Really Can Grow on Trees

AN extra pounds 400,000 in funding was pledged yesterday for North East woods.

The funding means that 40% more cash is available to support new tree planting and woodland management schemes this year compared with 2008.

The money is available through the English Woodland Grant Scheme operated by the Forestry Commission and provided under the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE). It is funded by Defra and the European Union.

The increase will allow more generous grants to be offered across a range of key programmes, all aimed at maximising the benefits of trees and woodlands to the region.

They include: .. An extra pounds 100,000 for native woodland creation in the Northumberland National Park, with the additional funding supporting up to 50 hectares of new woods, offering havens for wildlife.

. More support for woodlands, open to the public, to be established on the edge of towns and cities thanks to an additional pounds 100,000. …
