MURWILLUMBAH mother Karen Newman was horrified when she learnt Tweed Shire Council plans to remove a bike-riding track from her local park.

So she decided to do something about it.

On Thursday morning Mrs Newman began a petition against the removal of the track and associated BMX bike-riding facilities. She quickly had pages of signatures.

"If the council does this there won't be anything there for the children to ride their bikes on," said Mrs Newman.

"It's a bike track and they like to ride and skid.

"It keeps them off the main road so they are not crashing into cars, and they have fun.

"They stayed there till six o'clock the other night."

Along with signatures protesting the removal of the bike facilities from the park in William Street, Murwil- lumbah, Mrs Newman has been collecting written comments from those who have signed.

"One lady asked: 'why don't they have markets there?' and said it is a good exercise area for everybody," Mrs Newman said. …
