THE development industry has hit back at claims it is creating a land shortage on the Sunshine Coast by "sitting" on parcels which are ready to be built on.

The claim, made by Sunshine Coast council planning chief councillor Russell Green, sparked an angry response from the Urban Development Industry Association .

The president of the body's local branch, David Oliver, said it was an allegation that was often levelled at developers despite no proof ever being offered.

He placed the blame squarely on the council, citing its "recalcitrance", "under-resourcing" and "ineptitude at all stages of the development process".

Mr Green sparked the war of words with his claim the development industry would not be happy until it could do "whatever it wanted" with the Coast's land.

"They are continually trying to short-circuit the process but we will not seal the plans until the (infrastructure) work has been done."

Mr Oliver hit back, saying claims of so-called land banking were in contrast to the industry's experience of developing on the Coast. …
