Young Miners Give Wanderers a Scare

THE Young Miners sent a shudder through leading Football Mackay premier league contenders Wanderers at Harrup Park on Saturday.

Playing in front of a packed crowd, many of whom had probably never seen a soccer match before, the under 18s led Wanderers 2-0 at half time before wilting to a 4-2 loss.

The match was a curtain-raiser to the Whitsunday Miners-Logan United QSL game and there were close on 3,000 people at Harrup Park taking part in the Relay for Life to raise money for the Cancer Council.

Midfielders Joe Civello and Sam Petersen gave the Young Miners a perfect start with first half goals as they dominated their older opponents.

"But our boys fell asleep for 10 to 15 minutes after the break and Wanderers took control," Young Miners coach Brad Radunz said.

"Our boys just backed off a little bit and they took control."

Radunz said the young players, who train with the Whitsunday Miners and are seen as possible contenders for the upcoming national under 20 competition under the wing of new A-League team North Queensland Fury, were learning each week in the premier league. …
