Cinema's Curtain Call; Gympie's Movie Theatre Closed and Up for Sale

GYMPIE'S only cinema has closed.

The Sovereign Cinema's doors were locked yesterday and a notice taped to them that read: "To our valued customers, thank you for your patronage.

"Unfortunately the Sovereign Cinema is currently closed."

A short message on their website said the closure was due to "changes in business interests" and that the doors were closed for "the final time" and the complex for sale.

Owner Gary King had warned the business would shut because Gympie audiences were not utilising the expensively renovated Monkland Street complex.

Instead, Mr King said they were opting to drive to Noosa and see movies there which were causing the business to run at a loss.

The closure is a particular blow to Gympie's young moviegoers who made good use of the business during school holidays.

In a double blow to local movie buffs, Mr King's other enterprise, the Wonga Drive-In had also closed due to a prolonged period of bad weekend weather, he said. …
