THE most surprised person at the end of the City of Ipswich Kermesse at Mt Marrow on Sunday may have been the winner.

"It was not one of my major races," Ipswich Cycling Club member Peter Thompson said.

"It was meant to be just a training day."

That changed when Thompson became part of a 10-man breakaway after three laps of the 12 lap, 100km circuit between Mt Morrow and Haigslea.

"I was the only person from my team in the breakaway so I couldn't let them down," the Fusion-Teschner team rider said.

"It made for a pretty tough day.

"It was definitely one of the toughest courses I've ridden.

"It was either up or down."

Thompson, 22, had a tough task just staying with the breakaway for much of the race.

"Everyone was working pretty well together but I was suffering for most of the race," he said.

"I'm definitely a sprinter, not a climber.

"I was just basically trying to hang on."

That was until the final lap, when he knew he had a chance. …
