Man in Rescue Attempt Missing; Hunt May Resume at Low Tide for Man Who Vanished in River

Rescuers looking for a man who disappeared Sunday while trying to help another swimmer in the Ribault River called off the first phase of the search about 10 p.m.

The 26-year-old man, whose name had not been released as of late Sunday, disappeared in the water at the Harborview Boat Ramp when he went into the water to help a teenage girl who became caught in the current, police said.

The missing man, his wife and their three children were crabbing at the ramp when another person at the ramp off Harborview Drive decided to go into the river, said Denise Williams, a family member of the missing man. She said the family goes to the ramp frequently to catch crabs and said the missing man was a strong swimmer.

Lt. Steve Mullen of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said a teenage girl attempted to swim out to a crab pot about 50 feet from the dock, touch it, and swim back when she got into trouble. Two others went out but were also caught in the current. …
