ANY SOLE SURVIVOR COULD FIND ISOLATION IS INDEED SPLENDID

IF on Monday morning one North East club is left standing in the Premier League, their isolation will be splendid.

Should either Newcastle United or Sunderland emerge unscathed from a car crash of a season, they could find themselves in a good position.

In an increasingly global football environment, being left alone is not such a bad thing. Cup draws permitting, it will mean no derby next season, but is that such a loss? When the Magpies meet the Black Cats in particular, it is a great occasion for the region and - more often than in the case of quite a few local match-ups - sometimes an engaging spectacle. But Tyne-Wear clashes have become an occasional treat rather than a staple thanks to Sunderland's habit of yo- yoing between divisions. And for many spectatorsS , is something they can do without for a year. Plenty of policemen will certainly not mourn its passing. …
