Whiff of the Past

Article excerpt

The 80s are wafting back into the high street.

MARIE TURBILL sniffs out a retro trail..

FOR those of us who can remember Frank Bruno's invitation to "Splash it all over", a whiff of Brut can instantly transport us back 20 years.

But the man standing in front of you is just as likely to be young and gorgeous as he is a thinning, pot-bellied hangover from the Spandau Ballet years.

Because old favourites Old Spice, Brut and Blue Stratos, are making a comeback - complete with their original 1980s' price tags.

"You only have to walk around town to see the bright luminous fashions of the 80s," says Jackie Pink, store manager of The Fragrance Shop, Middlesbrough, which is about to take its first delivery.

"The 80s are definitely back with everyone watching Ashes To Ashes, Spandau Ballet making a come back and Middlesbrough's The Madison Reunion was a sell out." More than anything, the smell of the 80s will hit your nostalgia buttons, she says.

" Everyone has got a tale to tell to go with the first time they smelled them!" * The Perfume shop will be selling Brut, EDT spray, at pounds 6.99, Old Spice, 100ml, pounds 5.99 and Blue Stratos, 100ml, pounds 4.99, from June 1..

The stench was overpowering; the dog would scratch at the door to escape, eyes would water, paper would peel from the walls.

Well, now things have come full circle.

With the Eighties heavily influencing today's fashions, perhaps it's no surprise that Brut, Old Spice and Blue Stratos are storming our senses once again.

But, hang on, aren't we all too sophisticated to return to aftershaves better known for their ads than their sex appeal? …
