Angry Driver Accuses Retired Champ of 'Being in the Dark'

FOUR-time Australian Rally Champion Coral Taylor has rejected comments by a retired driver that competitors in the Kyogle Repco Rally would race around the course at night as they prepare for the three-day event in September.

Ms Taylor said she had not heard of Carolyn Boniface before a friend sent her an article, in which Ms Boniface said teams would practice at night on local roads, endangering wildlife.

"It makes me really cross when people make wild claims like this," Mrs Taylor said yesterday from Sydney.

"It may have happened in Europe in the 80s, but clearly Ms Boniface doesn't know how the sport is run in Australia."

Ms Boniface drove rally and racing cars from 1984 until the early 1990s in Europe for BMW and Alfa Romeo, winning several women's division championships.

Mrs Taylor said under Repco rules drivers can not exceed existing speed limits on practice runs. In many cases organisers have imposed limits lower than the legal limit. …
