Tower Sparks Keppel Hopes; Island Redevelopment Can't Start Soon Enough for Car Park Operators

DEVELOPMENT work to bring the tourists flooding back to Great Keppel Island could start as soon as July 2010 if the Queensland Government gives environmental and planning approvals by the end of the year.

Tower Holdings said yesterday its revised plans for the island, which include a 1300 acre (545 hectare) environmental park, revamped resort, golf course and marina, are being finalised and it can't wait to get started.

The work can't start soon enough for Judy and Wayne "Brassy" Ingram, who say they have struggled since Tower closed the resort.

The owners of Keppel Island Security Car Park on the mainland said they relied heavily on the resort trade, and since it closed they had some weeks without any income.

"Ninety-five percent of our business went down the tube," Judy said.

After years operating the car park, the pair were just getting ready to retire and instead have been trying to keep their business afloat. …
