IT IS definitely a dog's life, as G Taylor, of Ormseby, can testify.

He writes: My father, Joe Wilson, who, by the way, helped in the construction of the Gazette building, had an allotment situated behind what was then Cleveland Park greyhound stadium on Stockton Road.

We then owned a terrier dog called Miffy, and quite regularly my brother and I would take it with us to the allotment (the garden, as we called it) on a dog lead.

If we didn't go, Dad couldn't take Miffy with him, until he had the idea to make a wooden seat on the crossbar of his bicycle so Miffy could sit on the seat with his front paws resting on the handlebars, then Dad could ride to the garden with him.

On returning home he would have to pass the Newport Workingmen's Club. He would call in for a pint, leaving Miffy sitting on the bike outside.

People passing by would remark on him sitting there. Some would go to stroke him, but Miffy would snap at them. So there you have it, a guard dog for the bike. …
