Newtown Takes Lead over Cowboys; Losing Streak for Local Team

NEWTOWN remains the only undefeated Toowoomba Rugby League team and took the competition lead with their 20-14 win against Warwick at Newtown Oval yesterday.

In a tight contest, the Lions displayed one of their most disciplined performances of the season to share the competition lead with Dalby, taking top spot on points difference.

Heading into yesterday's clash, Warwick and Newtown were level in second place, but it was the Lions who hung on for the win.

Newtown team manager Geoff Kampf said the game was one of the best seen at Newtown for "about 20 years".

"It was a good, close game of football, but defensively we were very good," Kampf said.

"For us it's been all about keeping the mistake rate down.

"You have to hang on to the ball for more than one or two tackles in a set and today was the best we've controlled the ball all year."

Kampf said the Lions would now look forward to a two-week break, with the bye and weekend off for the state carnival coming just in time. …
