Dr Nitschke Gathering Finds Venue at University

RIGHT-to-die activist and internationally controversial figure Dr Philip Nitschke has been handed a lifeline only days after his planned Mackay seminar looked dead and buried.

After the Daily Mercury publicised Dr Nitschke's visit to the South West Mackay Neighbourhood Centre, scheduled for Thursday, the hall's booking agent, Naomi Anderson, immediately cancelled the public meeting, saying she was unaware the seminar was about euthanasia - something she was "180 per cent"' against.

But the public forum and following workshop will now be held at CQUniversity at 2.30pm on Thursday.

When Dr Nitschke announced his impending visit to Mackay last Thursday, he told the Daily Mercury the public meeting would be an information session and he would supply some general points about euthanasia and his organisation, Exit International.

A workshop to be held after the public meeting and open only to those over 50 or seriously-ill, would lay out exactly what people could do to end their lives.

CQ University head of Mackay campus Trevor Davison said the institution was contacted yesterday by Dr Nitschke's people seeking a place to speak - something Dr Davison was more than happy to provide. …
