THESE are the first pictures showing a glimpse of the inside of the new completed Newcastle City Library.

The Chronicle was invited to a sneak preview of the stunning pounds 40.2m building ahead of its official opening to the public next Sunday.

Now stocked up with books and facilities for all ages and interests, the interactive library boasts displays of heritage treasures, a vending machine for books, Dvds and CDs, a cafe sourcing locally-produced food, as well as a crche, story corner and stations to download music on ipods and mp3 players.

Hidden away on the top floor of the city's latest landmark building is an exhibit of Toon treasures, including works and tools used by famous North East artists such as Thomas Bewick.

With more space for visitors than the previous library and a colour-coded system to quickly find your way around, the building has taken two years to build and is home to the carved wooden head of river god Tyne. …
