WITH reference to the letter from Joe Wellthorpe (Are The Gurkhas A Special Case? 16.05.09), I am an ex-serviceman and I have been privileged to serve with these courageous men from Nepal.

The Gurkhas have served in the British Army for almost 200 years and they have won an amazing 26 Victoria Crosses in this time, the first in 1858 two years after the award was first granted by Queen Victoria.

Apart from being the bravest of the brave, they are among the most friendly people you could meet. By their heroism and total commitment to Great Britain they, above all others, deserve equal pensions and the right to live in this country, which they have so often been willing to die for.

I am proud to call Gurkhas my friends and would be proud to call them neighbours.

Mr Wellthorpe says that if we open our doors to all who fought with us all of Europe would be living here, except the Swiss and Germans. The Swiss have lived here for years, and the Germans, like all residents of the EU, are also made welcome. …
