ROBERT Thompson, pictured in last week's angling page with a big rainbow trout from Lockwood Beck, is the latest angler to express his dismay at the salmon slaughter at the Tees Barrage.

He wrote to the Gazette saying: "I enjoy my fly fishing, and like to try and catch a salmon on the Tees "When I was at the barrage earlier this week, down from the narrow fish ladder, I saw a big black seal taking a single bite out of each fish, then letting it go and doing the same to fish after fish.

"Last year I saw a bull seal take a 20lb salmon, bite it below the gills, take the liver and roe, and let the dead fish float away.

"We are again getting to the time of year when a lot of fish come up the river to the barrage and get trapped, the stretch becoming a food trap for seals.

"Something must be done quickly to help these fish migrate up the Tees or we will lose the species from the river. …
