Without Press We Would Not See Truth; VOICE OF THE NORTH

I CANNOT share the Archbishop of Canterbury's pessimism about the "systematic humiliation of MPs" and his description of the daily Press revelations as undermining people's confidence in the democratic system (The Journal, May 23).

Without the Press, we would still be in the dark about the extent to which the expenses system has been wide open to disgraceful abuse and shameless exploitation by greedy, self-serving politicians who have made a mockery of democracy and public service.

It is now clear to us all why the MPs fought tooth and nail at taxpayers' expense to conceal vital information about their addresses because it is their addresses that were the key to their secret, immoral world where rules could be bent and broken.

Surely the archbishop is not suggesting we should have confidence in a political system where rules that state clearly that there must be "no grounds for a suggestion of misuse of public money" can be so easily ignored by our political decision-makers? …
