Vandals Smash Pub's Ornate Stained Glass; 100 Year Celebrations Dampened

FOR 99 years and 362 days ornate stained glass windows at Grafton's iconic Weiley's Hotel stood the test of time.

They survived floods, drunks, parties, bar room brawls and the host of other dangers a pub can throw up.

But they didn't survive the vandals of 2009.

The irreplaceable leadlight windows on the Pound Street side of the hotel were broken some time last Thursday night or Friday morning. There is some damage to the windows facing Prince Street.

The building's owner, Les Weiley, said the vandalism was 'disconcerting' and has offered $1000 as a reward for information that would lead to the conviction of the person or people responsible.

Mr Weiley arrived home from China on Saturday and had his first opportunity to have a look at the damage about lunch time on Monday. He said that before then he could not face it.

He said there were suggestions the culprits had thrown bottles, perhaps beer bottles, at the windows. …
