Hostage Is Murdered; Al Qaeda Executes Briton

GORDON Brown today condemned al Qaeda's "barbaric" murder of a Briton who was kidnapped in Mali four months ago.

The Prime Minister said the Government had "strong reason to believe" that the terrorist cell had carried out its threat to kill Edwin Dyer.

"This tragedy reinforces our commitment to confront terrorism," Mr Brown said. "It strengthens our determination never to concede to the demands of terrorists, nor to pay ransoms.

"I want those who would use terror against British citizens to know beyond doubt that we and our allies will pursue them relentlessly, and that they will meet the justice they deserve." Mr Dyer was captured in Mali and held hostage for more than four months before being murdered.

His ordeal started with a socalled "show execution" where kidnappers fired a gun just an inch away from the head of a member of his party as they attacked the group's convoy.

Mr Dyer, who spoke fluent German and was working in Austria, was attacked and taken hostage by armed Tuareg rebels near the border with Niger. …
