Proceeds to Help in Cancer Battle

SHIRLENE Mannion's life "changed massively" six weeks ago when she was diagnosed with colon cancer.

Husband Michael and mother-in-law Barbara have dropped everything to help care for Shirlene and her two children, as she went through her first bout of chemotherapy this week.

On June 20, proceeds from Gladstone's annual Emergency Services Sportsmen's Dinner will be donated to Shirlene and her family in their ongoing battle, while money will also be raised for the palliative care units at the Gladstone Base and Mater Hospitals.

For Shirlene, the social aspect of the night is what she is looking forward to most.

"Have fun, get together and get support, it's going to be amazing," she said.

Shirlene said the greater Gladstone community had also extended their help.

"I couldn't believe the support," she said.

"Our friends, work and the school, they've been quite outstanding."

But it's support from strangers that has surprised the Mannion family most. …
