THE long and the Short of it is that while Newcastle dilly-dallied over owner and manager their arch rivals down the way moved like lightning to sort out all after maintaining their Premier League status.

Ellis Short was confirmed as owner of Sunderland and Steve Bruce as manager, both while poor old Alan Shearer was spending a fortnight sweating over his employment by an owner much more concerned with trying to sell his booby prize once again.

That Sunderland have become the only North East club in England's elite league, and landed a Geordie manager before another was officially installed at St James's Park, does not rest comfortably with the Toon Army.

However, with Mike Ashley at the helm of the good ship Magpie anything can happen. He is football's equivalent of the captain of the Titanic.

Bruce, by the way, is definitely a brave man. A Geordie running the Mackems is potentially an explosive mix. Ask Lee Clark! Of course, there are those from the north who have crossed the great divide and survived. …
