QUEENSLAND'S Jamaican star shooter Romelda Aiken hammered the final nail into the coffin of the NSW Swifts' title defence in a trans-Tasman netball thriller yesterday.

Aiken sunk three clutch goals in the final frantic 80 seconds for the desperate Firebirds to escape with a 62-61 victory at the Brisbane Convention Centre and stabilise their wavering play-off hopes.

Despite fighting back from a five-goal deficit early in the final quarter, the Swifts (2-7) were shattered to lose a match they had in their keeping before skipper Catherine Cox missed a shot for a two-goal lead in the dying stages.

Coach Julie Fitzgerald blamed NSW's inability to produce in the big moments for the defeat which ends the side's faint hope for the top four.

"I was very happy with my team for most of the game, it was just those critical stages of the match where we let ourselves down," Fitzgerald said.

In a pulsating climax, both sides pulled off a string of turnovers but it was under-fire Firebirds wing attack Tamsin Greenway who pulled out the biggest play of all. …
