IN the Wellstream NTSL basement battle, it was Benwell & Walbottle who came out on top, the serial escapologists giving themselves a lifeline and consigning relegation rivals Ryton to bottom spot.

But it didn't look that way at one time with the Bottle on the rocks at 78-9 when batting first. It was then that first team debutant James Carr came to their rescue with 22 runs in a last-wicket stand of 32 that took the home side to semi-respectability on 110.

Mark Cawthorn was the Ryton hero as he picked up another six wickets in a fierce 15-over spell.

But the bowling plaudits were to eventually go to the Benwell pairing of Richard Waddell and Malcolm Brown as they reduced the visitors to the rubble of 57 all out. Both picked up five wickets, and the innings was wrapped up in only 17.3 overs, the Bottle bobbing past Ryton with 53 runs to spare.

In the only other game played in the top flight, Swalwell crushed Tynedale by 113 runs, which took them soaring 23 points away from their rivals.

Ponteland to move into the pack with a 70- run win over S e a Burn. Matt Darwood ( 78) and Stuart Taylor ( 59) were the men behind Ponteland's score of 203- Then John Gardner ( 3- 19) and Duncan McGregor ( 3- 19) the ambition out of the Seaton batsmen as they pinned them to 133-7.

There's just no holding Alnmouth & Lesbury in the SG Wealth Management Northumberland League. …
