Council Stalls on Cheaper Stadium

SUNSHINE Coast council is unlikely to pursue a cheaper option for a stadium at Kawana's Stockland Park if a $5 million grant is not made available in this year's state budget.

The council already has $5 million on the table, matched by $5 million in federal funding contingent on the project going ahead as designed.

Sunshine Coast Sea Eagles director Peter Boyce has called on the council to redraw plans and go ahead with a $10 million facility if the state money is not forthcoming.

However, councillor and Stockland Park board member Keryn Jones yesterday ruled out the less expensive option.

Ms Jones said any changes to existing plans would trigger the need for a re-application to the federal government.

And she said a study of lesser priced options had already concluded that a $10 million project was not worth pursuing.

"The $15 million proposal is worth spending money on but it's still a fairly basic project now," she said. …
