Article excerpt

I JUST finished reading a list of Queensland's top 150 icons in The Courier Mail, which was broken up into 10 categories with 15 nominations for each category. State shapers - organisations that have made significant contribution - I can't go past the good old GAPDL here, Gladstone Area Promotional and Development bureau, which continually strives to keep Gladstone on everyone's lips.

Sport legends - There have been plenty, Benny Mac during his boxing career was definitely a local favourite, he was also a bloke that played a bit of footy for Brothers over the years and is held in very high regard. Natural attractions - you can't go past the Gladstone Harbour. How lucky are we to have this on our doorstep? Defining moments - there have been many over the years, but for me when McDonalds came to town we were finally recognised as a city.

Events - the Harbour Festival. How could you go past the Harbour Festival as a Gladstone icon? Judy Whicker has shaped this event with the help of her staff over many years and it is something we all look forward to on the Gladstone calendar.

Influential artists - I can't go past two blokes here, the painter (Trev) and the leccy (Don), the most influential piss artists of all time, definitely Gladstone icons. …
