I WRITE with dismay at the proposed closure the Northumberland day care centres ( The Journal, June 9). My 85- year- old mother the centre in Hexham and it remains the only mental stimulation she gets during the week.

The rest of the week she spends sitting alone.

It is clear from the letter sent round to the elderly people who attend the centres that decision has already been made and that the consultations proposed will not affect this decision.

There appears to be no factual evidence to comment that "many people prefer not to attend the centres" and would prefer a lump sum to spend as they wish. Please, give us the evidence for it seems to me that the majority enjoy the centres and meeting friends there.

Indeed, the centres are over subscribed.

The council suggest the elderly can still friends, but how is this to be implemented? Taxis from Allendale to Hexham cost pounds 40 (or even pounds 15 within the village) and I am sure the sum proposed as an alternative to the centres will not cover this type of expenditure. …
