Past Boxing Trainer Helps New Breed

THE past, present and potential future of Ipswich boxing have come together to try to revive the city's proud boxing heritage.

Former Ipswich PCYC boxing trainer Allan Toomey paid a visit to current trainer Eddie Scott at the Griffith Road club.

Mr Toomey went back to the club for the first time in 30 years hoping he could help revive the glory days of Ipswich police boys' club boxers.

"One of my boxers I used to train, Kevin Ahearn, came to me. His lad's up there training and Kevin asked me to come up and have a look," Mr Toomey said.

"I did a lot of boxing in Kingaroy and those areas when I was young.

"When I came down here, my two boys Gary and Wayne were getting bullied at school so I went up to the police boys club and trained them up and they came along pretty good.

"We decided to form a club and go outside to box because some nights there were 40 or 50 boys there. …
