AT the start of Carers' Week, Redcar MP Vera Baird hailed the thousands across Teesside for their 'priceless contribution' to society.

Why then are they so undervalued? Mrs Baird was right when she said they deserved to be applauded, citing the "thousands of people in this constituency who sacrifice their time - and often their health, finances, work and social life - in order to care for a loved one".

But according to the organisors of Carers' Week, which ends today, a shocking number have been pushed to extreme levels of stress and depression as a result of caring.

Almost three-quarters (74%) said they had reached breaking point.

Well over a third blamed "frustration with bureaucracy", pointing to complex and lengthy procedures for welfare benefits, healthcare and social services. Others suffered from lack of sleep and financial worries.

For most carers, "practical support" would - or did - make the difference, with "just having someone to talk to" a close second. …
