VISITING the National Trust's Wallington Hall with my sister a couple of weeks ago, I said I was certain that in a previous life I was a true lady whose only worries were mistakes in her needlework and catching up with her correspondence! In true bossy-big-sister style, she declared that I was probably cleaning out grates and bashing rugs! Even if she's right, surely in my next life I shall be very wealthy? I'll have a superb home with glorious gardens, a pool to swim in every morning and a conservatory to sit in and entertain in the evenings and on long sunny weekends - which my new life will obviously have.

In fact, I shall live in a house very much like Newton Hall, pictured on homemaker's front page and on the page opposite. It is truly magnificent and properties such as this are rare to the market - I'm beginning to sound like an estate agent here! One of the many reasons I love living in the North East is the superb rural houses, set in spectacular grounds or estates. …
