FOUR CHEERS; Charity's Best Work

Article excerpt

Few charities have a reputation as good as that of The Community Foundation of Jacksonville.

Its Web site reports it is "home to over 350 individual funds, holds more than $125 million in assets and has made more than $140 million in grants."

And its reputation got even better recently when it was awarded its fourth consecutive four-star rating for sound fiscal management.

The designation came from Charity Navigator, described in a news release as a "premier charity evaluation service."

This designation, the release continues, "places The Community Foundation in the top 7 percent of charities evaluated by Charity Navigator."

Northeast Florida has a number of outstanding nonprofits, and The Community Foundation is one of the leaders.

THANKS FROM PUTNAM HUMANE SOCIETY

Volunteer Carolyn Kieler of Georgetown sent this e-mail:

"Writing thank-you notes to the caring and generous people who responded to the recent appeal from Putnam County's Humane Society of Northeast Florida is an enjoyable task.

"The stories are heartwarming.

"A penny collection amounting to over $200; money previously earmarked for a vacation, but instead, given to the animals; proceeds from a lemonade stand; a generator; food; flea control; and much more.

"However, we can't stop now. Times are tough, and many more animals are being turned in than are being adopted.

"If you have already given, please keep us in mind when you are again able to donate. If you have not already done so, please consider giving whatever you can to help the animals at the shelter.

"And above all, become part of the solution to the problem of unwanted animals by having your pet spayed or neutered. It's the right thing to do - for everyone."

Saying thank you is one of the great gifts, and it doesn't cost a penny.
