Keeping It in the Family; Juliette Is Up Next for Afghan Conflict

A SQUADDIE from Billingham has become the third member of her family to serve in Afghanistan in the last year.

Juliette Brown, 31, followed in the footsteps of her younger cousins Perry Sanders, 19, and Kieran Sanders, 20, when she flew out to Camp Bastion in Helmand at the weekend.

For the newly promoted Sergeant in the Royal Logistics Corps the will be her first of the country.

And her mum Isabella, 61, hopes her experience will be less fraught than that of her nephew Perry..

As reported in the Gazette last year, the Billingham teenager was at the wheel of a British Army vehicle when a suicide bomber in Afghanistan rammed their convoy and killed one of his best friends.

In her 12 years serving in the army Juliette has seen her fair share of war zones, including two tours of Bosnia as well as Kosovo and Iraq.

She said of her experience near Basra in Iraq in 2005: "The fighting had calmed down by then. But I did have a near miss with a roadside bomb on a convoy I was on. …
