Man Finds It Difficult to Get a Date

Article excerpt

Byline: subd

I'm a guy and I find it so hard to meet women. It's not that I'm unattractive or unemployed or freakish. I'm a decent, pretty good looking, nice guy. But women today are cougars or on the "prowl" or cats or cows or I don't know, I can't keep track. They travel in packs and it's so hard to approach a woman when she's in a pack of ten other women all protecting each other from the advances of men. Doesn't anyone go out on single dates anymore? Why all the group outings all the time? And if I tell a woman she's pretty or offer to buy her a drink, why is that considered sleazy? I've been out of the dating game for years and am just back into the scene in the last six months and it's a jungle. What are the rules these days?

It may be a jungle out there, I'm not debating that, but a word to the wise: it doesn't help to refer to women as animals. I get that your letter means to refer to women as animals as a metaphor for the jungle, and the 'cougar' reference of women prowling for younger men, but I would hope that in your real dating life, you wouldn't refer to a woman as an animal. If you do, that might solve this case of the dating dilemma full stop.

However, assuming you are like a great many single men, that is, decent, attractive, nice and genuine, I can sympathise with the 'approaching the pack' problem and I tend to agree with you that it doesn't make for an ideal dating scenario - whether that's group dating so women (or men too sometimes) feel supported and safe on a first date, or whether that's in the singles scene and trying to land the first date or phone number (or email address). It is a thoroughly daunting prospect to approach a woman to chat with if she's surrounded by tight girlfriends all out having a good time. Being sized up by one woman is difficult enough, but to have a posse of women doing it would make it even harder to break the ice in that circle to even say hello, let alone flirt. …
