IS THE circus finally coming to Oxford Circus? Well, not quite, but close enough to infuriate residents of north Mayfair who include Jacob Rees-Mogg and the Duke of Marlborough. They have just learned to their horror that a large plot of land opposite Selfridges may have a funfair operating on it for a month in July.

The site belongs to developers Land Securities who have demolished Park House to make way for a new scheme they have planning permission for. But the credit crunch has put the project on ice and the site is currently empty save for the bright blue hoarding.

Jarvis Astaire, boxing promoter and former deputy chairman of Wembley, lives nearby and is livid. "I don't understand how a company like Land Securities would stoop so low as to seek to earn a few pennies by allowing such a tacky use for an important site -- and upset all the neighbours at the same time."

Apparently, a legal loophole means the company can do almost anything on the site for 28 days. …
