NEW FICTION One Day by David Nicholls, is published by Hodder & Stoughton, priced pounds 12.99.

Available now.

The author best known for Starter For Ten, a coming-of-age novel set against a background of University Challenge which was made into a film starring James McAvoy, is once more getting nostalgic in this love story set on St Swithin's Day 1988.

It begins as a highly-mismatched couple, Emma and Dexter, wake up in bed together on their last day at Edinburgh University before going their separate ways. The story catches up with them every July 15 from then on, building up snapshots of how their lives have panned out, how they change over time and what they mean to each other.

As with all of Nicholls's novels, it is extremely funny and heartbreakingly sad -- we see Emma yearn for Dexter in the early years until he descends into drink and drugs as his TV presenting career and marriage falter. We see her broken relationships and lack of fulfillment until the point when the couple finally need each other at the same time. I won't spoil the ending, but safe to say there is a dramatic surprise.

This is a much more grown-up story for Nicholls, whose previous novels have been lighter and more nostalgic: focusing on dating, unrequited love and being a student or a struggling actor - his second novel The Understudy was a hilarious look at the life and loves of the eponymous hero.

He once again captures the minutiae of relationships and all the emotions that surround them in One Day, but in a more subtle, tender, mature way.

Perhaps Nicholls has finally come of age.

The story of the Hollywood star who became a real-life princess is well-known, so you would hope that a new book about Grace Kelly would have something different to offer. …
