World Cup Is Winner for Soccer

THE Socceroos last week achieved the remarkable feat of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

As equally impressive is that this is the second consecutive World Cup that Australia has qualified for, an achievement that can be viewed as a mark of the nation's growing status in the "world game".

Surprisingly, there wasn't the same hoop-la surrounding the Socceroos' success as there was four years ago and possibly that is because we now expect our team to be among the elite.

But for any nation to earn a place in the biggest sporting event on the planet is a fantastic achievement but I suspect that for many supporters it won't be enough and they will expect the Socceroos to advance to the second stage in South Africa.

Coach Pim Verbeek, who took over from Guus Hiddink, has done a great job guiding the Socceroos through the tough Asian qualifying series.

He has been criticised for adopting a style of football that is tight and defence-orientated and provides little flair. …
