Workshops discuss autism

AUTISM Queensland will host three workshops in Gladstone next month to provide Central Queensland parents and carers of people with autism with practical strategies to better manage the disorder. Two will be on Tuesday, July 28 and the topics will be: Understanding Autism - practical exercises, discussions and support strategies for families and carers people with Autism (9am to midday); and Clues to Managing Behaviour - insight into the whys and practical hows for working with individuals with behavioural concerns, including practical tasks and exercises (1 to 4pm). On Wednesday, July 29 the topic will be: Changing Grooves - Designing, making and using sensory supports for individuals with autism, sensory challenges for people with autism and practical coping strategies to manage stress, change and learning (9am to 3pm). The workshops are designed specifically for teachers, teacher aides, counsellors, school support staff and parents and carers. All workshops will be at Rydges Gladstone, 100 Goondoon Street.

Fair celebrates history

GLADSTONE Regional Council will host a Q150 Colonial Fair at the Calliope River Historical Village on July 19 from 9am to 2pm. Part of Queensland's 150th birthday celebrations, the Colonial Fair will feature an extensive program of events, demonstrations and displays set in the colonial period of Queen Victoria's long reign, from 1837 to 1901. Visitors are encouraged (but not required) to dress in costume for the event. The fair is designed to instil in visitors a combined sense of nostalgia and admiration for those whose efforts laid the foundation for today's comfortable lifestyle.
