A CYCLIST knocked over by a hitand-run driver is fighting for his life in hospital.

The man was hurt after a black sports hatchback struck his mountain bike on Monkseaton Drive, in Whitley Bay, North Tyneside.

The driver failed to stop and left the scene after the accident. Police are appealing for witnesses to help them trace the car.

The crash happened at around 9.50am yesterday near the Sainsbury's supermarket.

The cyclist was taken to North Tyneside General Hospital. Police today said his condition was critical but stable.

It is understood the car lost a wing mirror in the incident and there would be visible evidence of damage to the vehicle.

The car was travelling in the same direction as the red Falcon Long Beach bike, heading west towards Earsdon Road.

Insp Paul Gilroy, of Northumbria Police, said: "We urgently need to trace the offending car and driver.

"The driver must have been aware of the collision when they chose to drive off from the scene. …
