DAD ROCK

If the last-minute Father's Day gifts on Page 1 of this section still don't do it for you, you could always whip up a quick mix CD for Pop. We tried to pick songs that aren't too sappy ("Butterfly Kisses") or tunes that don't exactly paint fathers in a good light ("Papa Was a Rolling Stone").

1. "Cat's in the Cradle," by Harry Chapin: "He said 'I'm gonna be like you, Dad, you know I'm gonna be like you.' "

2. "Your Mama Don't Dance," by Loggins and Messina: "Your mama don't dance and your daddy don't rock and roll."

3. "Hot Rod Lincoln," by Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen: "My pappy said 'Son, you're gonna drive me to drinkin' if you don't stop drivin' that hot rod Lincoln.' "

4. "That's My Job," by Conway Twitty: "That's my job, that's what I do. Everything I do is because of you."

5. "That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine," by Gene Autry: "If I could recall all the heartaches, dear old Daddy, I've caused you to bear, if I could erase those lines from your face and bring back the gold to your hair."

6. "Surrender," by Cheap Trick: "Mommy's all right, Daddy's all right, they just seem a little weird."

7. "Oh Daddy," by Fleetwood Mac: "If there's been a fool around, it's got to be me."

8. "Put it There," by Paul McCartney: "Put it there if it weighs a ton, that's what the father said to his younger son."

9. "Leader of the Band," by Dan Fogelberg: "My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man. I'm just a living legacy to the leader of the band."

10. "Daddy's Home," by Shep and the Limelites: "I'm not a thousand miles away, Daddy's home to stay."

11. "Fool to Cry," by the Rolling Stones: "When I come home, baby, and I've been working on night long, I put my daughter on my knee and she says, 'Daddy, what's wrong?' "
