I AM, quite simply, over rain just lately. I moved to Lismore about 26 years ago and arrived in early March.

It rained, every single day, from March through to June. I hated being here. I cried for ages, thinking to myself: "What on earth have I done?"

No one seemed very friendly, and I heard the old country saying that you 'have to live here 40 or more years to be considered a local'.

I missed Sydney, the cheap but wonderful restaurants of Surry Hills where I lived, walking around parts of the city, the parks, the Paddington markets, snooping for bargains.

I didn't want to be here - and it kept raining. That was a long time ago and, as happens, things change.

Lismore is now home for me. It has given me some of the best friends I have ever had, and courage to do things on my own.

I took my mower apart one day and lost my way putting it back together. I had far too many bits left over. …
