Burns Point Ferry Mutiny; Residents in South Ballina Oppose Council Decision on $200 a Year for Cars

SOUTH BALLINA residents using the Burns Point ferry will now have to pay an annual fee of $200 per car.

However, administration charges for quarterly tickets were scrapped at Ballina Shire Council's meeting yesterday.

Councillors also voted to liaise with the Burns Point Ferry Watchdog Committee about the fee structure for 2010/11.

But many residents say this is not good enough.

Committee spokesman Stephen Leuckel said there was a 'more workable' solution.

"This will, in effect, drive users away from the ferry," he said.

"We had proposed a flat rate of $140 per car. It is a more palatable solution. All residents report a willingness to pay something, but it needs to be fair.

"The ferry needs to be looked at as an asset and not a liability."

Cr Peter Moore put forward a motion to adopt the flat rate of $140 per car, which was seconded by Cr David Wright.

But it was not supported by other councillors. …
