London Really Puts on a Show

THERE are a few things that are almost mandatory to do when visiting London.

Watch the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, visit the tower and tower bridge, use the tube system and maybe some shopping in Covent Garden.

And then there is, of course, taking in a show.

London is a veritable hive of theatrical activity. From shows such as the Mouse Trap, which has been entertaining audiences for more than half a century, to the new production of the Aussie smash-hit Priscilla - Queen of the Desert, every where you look in London's theatre land there is a sign, poster or billboard advertising something.

But with a global financial crisis looming and belts getting tighter than a producer's purse, how can one justify spending a few hundred dollars on entertainment ... in London.

Well, the good news is, the GFC has sent airlines into a panic, so it is nearly as cheap to fly to London as it is to drive to Brisbane (petrol is that dear) and now is the perfect time to take advantage of the cut-price flights available.

Hotel accommodation is the same with many of the major chains offering big discounts to get you through their doors.

But while it is taking an economic meltdown to get airlines and accommodation to come down to a level that we mere mortals can afford, entertaining on the cheap is something the London theatres are exceptional at.

Let us take, for example, the hottest ticket in town at the moment: Wicked.

Everything this show touches turns to gold - well, green as the case may be - and despite being on in London for more than two years, it is still tricky to get your butt on a decent seat.

That is unless you are in on a secret. It isn't a well-kept secret (they print it on their brochure and it is on their website), but no one seems to notice. …
