THE republican movement's push for Coast support for an Australian republic by 2015 is being driven in part by a Year 12 high school student.

Maroochydore High captain Mark Pennini is the media liaison and youth officer for newly formed Sunshine Coast forum Committee of the Australian Republican Movement.

Mark, who will start tertiary studies at Canberra's Australian National University next year, said the movement's Queensland branch saw this region as critical to the push.

Despite the Coast's inherent conservatism, his committee had been heartened by the enthusiasm in the region for a republic and felt there had been a significant shift in thinking.

Despite the prime minister being lukewarm at best about putting the republic on the agenda, Mark said regardless of the financial crisis any time was a good time to raise the issue.
