A GOLFING grandad from Middlesbrough is celebrating his fifth hole-in-one in a career spanning 34 years.

The whisky was on Stuart Falconer, 61, following his remarkable achievement at Wilton Golf Club, where he has been a member for five years.

Stuart, of Marton, coyly admitted the experience did not live up to the first hole-in-one he hit in 1977.

But after his wife Ann, 61, contacted the Gazette, the former Cleveland Golf Club player modestly conceded achieving five is a remarkable feat - with some of the best in the sport never hitting even one in a lifetime.

"When it did go in, we all jumped up in the air and shouted 'yes!' but afterwards, the other lads went on about it more than me." Nonetheless Stuart was happy to keep up the traditional treat of the proud golfer - using his prize money towards a decent bottle of whisky, and was more than happy to toast the achievement with his club mates..

As for the rest of the day's competition, Stuart said: "I didn't play very well.

After the hole-in-one I went to pieces to be honest." Stuart, whose sons Richard, 31, and Stephen, 38, are also mad on golf, now has a handicap of 12 - but his best ever is five.

"That lasted a week but it fluctuated between six and nine for quite a time," said Stuart.

Stuart took up golf as a stress-relieving hobby at the age of 26 - and recommends it as a relaxing pastime.

"It started as a hobby but I soon became a fanatic," he said. …
