Bonnets Up for Women's-Only Car Workshops

ONE look at Nikki Powell's hands and you have a fair assumption as to what her profession is.

"I scrubbed and scrubbed them last night," the fully qualified mechanic said, hiding her fingers from view.

Miss Powell along with three of her colleagues conducted a women's-only mechanical workshop at the weekend with great success.

A total of 30 women booked in to the free session at A1 Exhaust and Mechanical where they were taken through the ins, outs and unders of their cars.

The 24-year-old said there was a boot load of good reasons to know car maintenance basics.

"Firstly, it is a safety issue," she said.

"Also a lot of the time people don't know how to react in a bad situation. Like when your car is overheating."

Incidentally, for those who don't know, Miss Powell said do not pour a bucket of ice-cold water in as that would crack the head.

"Put your heater on full bore as that gets the coolant flowing through. …
