Woman, 82, Fights for Life after Crazed Knife Attack

AN 82-year-old woman is fighting for her life today after being stabbed nine times in an apparently random attack as she walked home after shopping.

Ann Driscoll was attacked in daylight in Harlesden yesterday as she clutched her week's groceries. She staggered 100 yards covered in blood before passers-by came to her rescue.

As she was taken to hospital she begged the crew to let her housebound husband know what had happened.

Police said nothing was taken from the pensioner and they fear she may have been the victim of a random attack by a crazed knifeman.

Mrs Driscoll, who looks after her ill husband Cornelius, was in a critical condition in hospital today with injuries to her neck and stomach.

Scotland Yard said the victim had been shopping in Harlesden High Street and was seen outside Tesco at 2.20pm before she is believed to have caught the No 18 bus.

She was walking along Burns Road just before 3pm when she was attacked. Afterwards she staggered to Fortune Gate Road, outside Keir Hardie House, where she was helped by passers-by.

Mrs Driscoll is believed to have spoken to police briefly and described her assailant as white, aged 35 to 40 and of medium height. He had brown hair and was wearing brown clothing.

Police said there was no apparent motive for the assault and believe the knifeman may have been stalking the area for someone to attack.

Detective Inspector Ian Lott said: "The investigation is in its early stages and inquiries are ongoing to fully establish the victim's movements.

"If you believe you have any information, or saw the assault take place, I would urge you to ring police and speak to us in confidence." Mrs Dris-colis white, 5ft 2in tall, of petite build with grey hair. She was wearing a beige skirt, off-white blouse, linen jacket and grey shoes. …
