IF the smell of burnt rubber and petrol matched with the unmistakeable drone of karting engines is of interest, the Southern Cross Motorsports Queensland State Championships is definitely the place to be this weekend.

Held at the Cooloola Coast Kart Club, the Gympie club was granted the right to host the event by the Australian Karting Association this time last year after successfully conducting the Queensland Closed Titles.

In total, 385 karting competitors are expected to take part in the event - some coming from as far as Western Australia in what is ultimately a testament of the event's pull.

A strong contingent of Gympie competitors is poised to take to their home track, hoping the advantage of racing on familiar ground will give them the edge needed to outlast their competition.

Gympie accountant Sharon Jaenke is one of a growing number of female competitors surging through the ranks, and is positioning herself with a view of upsetting her male counterparts. …
