Glitter of Twitter Has PR in a Flutter; Groups Capitalise on Networking Revolution

Tweeting is the new buzz-word in the realm of government and non-profit organisations, with several Queensland organisations joining the Twitter revolution to get their message out to the masses.

Queensland Health has provided daily swine flu updates on Twitter for several weeks, while the Red Cross Blood Service is using the social networking service to promote their latest donation campaign.

The SMS updates are referred to as "tweets."

Blood service spokeswoman Rebecca Cook said social network marketing would continue to be used to communicate with the public and as a research tool.

"We are currently trialling Twitter in this year's Donate for Your State campaign, sending out updates on the tally between Queensland and New South Wales and also providing facts and information on giving blood," she said.

Twitter is a real-time SMS service that lets users get short SMS updates from family, friends and work mates.

Businesses and organisations have joined the trend, sending users updates on news and other hot topics. …
