Onions Gets the Nod over Harmison

ENGLAND chairman of selectors Geoff Miller has explained why Durham's Graham Onions was preferred to club-mate Steve Harmison for the 13-man squad first Ashes Test against Australia at Cardiff.

Harmison staked a claim for the opening clash of the series, which starts on Wednesday, by twice claiming the wicket of highly-rated Australian opener Phillip Hughes when bowling for England Lions last week.

But the selectors plumped for Onions, who'd also performed well for the Lions at Worcester and impressed in his first two Tests against the West Indies in May.

Miller said: "We've seen what Steve can do and we know what he's capable of doing, we just need him to go away and continue to do that because there might be some surface somewhere later on in the series that requires the kind of bowler that Steve is - he's quite understanding of that.

"Steve bowled really well at Worcester, but the thinking was that Graham has got possession of the position, he's done well (with England) and done well in county cricket and we are consistent with our selection policy so he got the nod. …
