Championing Aged Care Call; $950,000 Qld Project Spills over Border

AGED-CARE workers and residents in Ballina are helping with 'innovative' research to discover the best ways to treat and prevent wounds.

Crowley Village in Ballina is one of seven aged-care facilities - and the only one in NSW - to participate in the Champions for Skin Integrity project.

It is being run by researchers at the Queensland University of Technology's (QUT) Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation.

The researchers were in Ballina this week to start work on the two-year, $950,000 project.

QUT nurse practitioner in wound management, Michelle Gibb, said it was the first time this type of research had received funding.

"It has been an intensive week here in Ballina," she said.

"We've been meeting with residents, doing some education, raising awareness of wound management and doing skin integrity surveys.

"We will be doing ongoing evaluation to see what strategies are working. …
